Zero Liquid Discharge for Pacific Steel Group: A Milestone in Sustainable Steel Production

Russula and Pacific Steel Group are forging a new path in sustainable industry practices by implementing a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system at the groundbreaking steel micro mill in California, the first of its kind in 50 years. This project, a direct response to the region's stringent effluent discharge restrictions, underscores a shared commitment to environmental stewardship.

To achieve an efficient ZLD system, Russula is deploying advanced membrane technologies for both the raw water treatment and effluent discharge processes. This will result in:

• Enhanced raw water quality, leading to reduced purge volumes.
• Effective effluent reuse through ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis membranes, preceded by DAF pre-treatment to eliminate oils and other contaminants that could compromise process efficiency.

This strategic partnership not only supports the construction of a state-of-the-art facility, dedicating approximately 63 of its 174 acres to renewable energy and incorporating advanced carbon capture and filtration, but also marks a significant step in Russula’s vision of driving global sustainability within the industry
