Located in Darlington, SC, Nucor Steel South Carolina has replaced thirteen stand drives of its bar mill number 2. Russula provided the electrical equipment and engineering and on-site services of installation, supervision and commissioning.
The existing rolling mill stand drives, type SD3000, are installed in line-ups consisting of a drive and an AC incoming circuit breaker. The objective of the upgrade was to replace the existing power and controls of the drives and AC breakers for 12 mill stands. Each drive was replaced with a new equivalent unit based on the ABB DCS800 series. The new drives were supplied already installed in cabinets and were integrated into the control system using ethernet.
In order to minimize disruptions to operations thirteen drives were pre-installed along side the existing drives to effectively switch over during the commissioning period that began on September 24th, 2017. The new drives were successfully commissioned during the seven-day outage and NSSC resumed production on October 1st, 2017.
