Nucor Corporation has awarded a contract to Russula to upgrade the drives and automation of the finishing end at their #2 bar mill in Plymouth, Utah. The extent of this upgrade includes the cut-to-length area from the cooling bed aligning rolls thru the cold shear and straightener and up to the stacker, which was successfully upgraded by Russula in March 2015. The scope of supply includes Rockwell Contrologix PLCs, ABB DCS800 DC drives and Rockwell PowerFlex 755 AC drives. All communication will be via Ethernet IP.
As this is the second phase of the mill upgrade the key to this project is the full integration with the first phase, the upgrade of the stacker. Thus the two phases will have fully integrated HMI and data acquisition systems. The existing HMI on the stacker will be expanded to the cut-to-length area as will the IBA high speed data acquisition system. The cut-to-length area will have a dedicated operator’s desk.
Russula is responsible for installation advisement, commissioning and training.Construction of the AC and DC drives and control equipment is currently underway at the Russula workshop in Spain. The start-up for the cut-to-length line is planned for September, 2016.
