On February 3rd, 2017, after cold commissioning, technical specialists from Silat and Russula rolled the first wire rod in coil. Located in Caucaia, Brazil, the new single-strand wire rod mill produces 5.5-16 mm wire rod and rebar in coils, complementing Silat’s current production capability of 8-32 mm straight reinforcing bar for a total capacity of 600,000 tpy. Russula supplied the complete rebar and wire rod mill.

130 mm to 160 mm billets are cold charged and heated in a walking hearth reheat furnace then passed through a 20 stand continuous mill, comprised of housingless stands. Fed from the bar mill finishing stands, the rod outlet includes a 10-pass, high-speed twist free finishing block, controlled cooling line, coil forming station, pallet conveyor, hook conveyor, coil compacting and tying machine, coil weighing and tagging station and unloading table. In its entirety, the coil handling system is designed for maximum throughput and to compact the shortest coil possible for each product.

The wire rod outlet features the latest Russula innovations for long product rolling technology. The laying head design allows for more consistent coil formation and rolling stability. With this innovative technology Silat will be able to roll at 110 m/s sustained speeds. Russula’s compacting and handling system is completely automatic, designed for a fast, sophisticated process. Integrated encoders, sensors and advanced automation make for reliable operation, easy trouble-shooting and maintenance.

In addition, Russula also provided installation supervision, commissioning and process support. Wire rod produced on the first day of operations was flawless and commercially saleable, which is attributed to well-engineered and fabricated equipment, an enterprising team and excellent collaboration between Silat and Russula. Silat’s high-speed wire rod mill is one of the most advanced rolling mills in the region.
